Recently, I received several comments which suggested that I took "heads from pictures and then ran them through filters." and possibly "stole the bodies too." Now I was annoyed, and the matter has been dealt with, but I would like to set the record straight.

The few times I've tried out a Photoshop (texture or filter) shortcut it has looked awful and I've hurriedly gone back to painting. I admire people who who can make these techniques look brilliant and effortless, and I will certainly mention (proudly) if I've mastered anything beyond very simple colour, contrast, size and position tweaking. Painting is my default.

I'll also admit to being slightly boggled that it is "obvious" I haven't painted the faces. I certainly paint faces and bodies (and background elements) on different layers, and use multiple references. Also I get lazy when painting some things, so there might be small technique differences between different areas of a single painting - but technique laziness is all it is.

In response, here is a demonstration of how I paint portraits and simple sketches. The final sketch is here: [link] More complex paintings involve a very similar technique, just with lots (LOTS!) more layers. :D

Thanks :D I love seeing other people's artistic methods - so this was my versionof how I paint (I'd be surprised if anyone actually used it as a tutorial!)

That's very impressive! Wish I could use programs like this. Methos is a great model for it too.

Oooo.

I haven't done enough art in the last 20 years to maintain what few skills I had. I've gotta bookmark this page and try to imitate.

I'll never be a real artist like most of the women in my family, but I'd be bally better if I'd start practicing again! This looks like a great lesson to use ...both trying to imitate what you did, and then trying to do the same thing with other photos.

Won't get to it any time soon, but I'm saving it to my favorites. THANK YOU! (If I ever make any piccies using this guide, I'll include a link here in acknowledgement.)

It might not work for anyone else, but I'd be interested to see. There are so many How to Paint tutorials on dA in so many different styles, and so many clever digital techniques - most of which I've never figured out :D I paint digitally because I'm lazy, but I still want to use traditional techniques!

Oh! Fantastic! I am so faving this! And tweeting it, and LJ/Blogging it.

And though I am very, very sorry about the trouble that led to your creating this tutorial, I am damn glad to have it!

 Thank you! (or maybe it should be  instead!).

I find other artists tutorials and the ways they paint fascinating, and since I paint very differently than many other people (or at least the people whose tutorials I've seen), I thought it would be interesting do this. Just need the motivation.

The comments was more puzzling than anything else though certainly rather rude, but there have been very nice commenters who were puzzled at whether something was a photomanipulation, or a painting, so it must confuse some people. And here I thought I was obvious with my messy brushstrokes :)

On the upside, this probably means that you're good enough that some people can't believe you're real. :) And I think that's a good thing!

I like this explanation (despite being slightly boggled by it) :)
