Artist's Comments

These are all the little character portraits I did for the Tardis BigBang Challenge for Dr Who fandom where Artists are assigned a (20 000+ word) story to illustrate. My assignment was a cute comedy starring Sarah Jane, Jackie and Mickey (bottom row) with guest appearances by Rose, the Doctor and Donna (top row).

The cover I did for the story is over here in Scraps --> [link]

Mostly I just wanted to try out some simple portraits. These were great practice for expressions, teeth (!) and hair, but reinforced the fact that I work best when I know the characters well. Donna is referenced but I've only seen one of her episodes and it was difficult to get a likeness of Donna rather than just a likeness of the photo.

I'm grateful for crit from *crysothemis , ileliberte and Niki-chidon who offered advice on making the individual portraits in this mini-gallery more cohesive, and the design much cleaner and simpler.

References used. Wacom tablet and Corel Painter.

I am amazed.

Having seen all the Donna episodes so far (hoorah for living in the UK,) I'd say you have captured the spirit of Donna perfectly.

It won't be quiet, it won't be safe, and it won't be calm. But I'll tell you what it will be: the trip of a lifetime.

these are miraculous. Especially the Doctor, that's perfect. I really like the colour palette, too - nice warm earth tones.

A pirate walks into a bar. The bartender notices he has a steering wheel sticking out of his trousers and asks, “Hey, buddy, doesn’t that thing hurt?”
“Yarrrr!" the pirate replies,"It’s drivin’ me nuts!”

Fantastic! I love the Doctor, Donna and Rose especially, and Jackie and Mickey are also pretty awesome. Since you say critique is encouraged, the only one that didn't blow me away completely was Sarah Jane -- I think her face is wider than that, but a touch more jaw on the viewer's left side would do it, I think. But it's really a tiny detail. I'm always so amazed by how you capture both the faces and the personalities of your subjects so perfectly; this is just stunning.

I haven't even SEEN Dr. Who, and I still find this jaw-dropping, fantastic! I bow to your talent with people.

*stunned*

I've loved your SGA stuff and have been secretly wishing and hoping you would one day tackle my second favorite show, Doctor Who.

These are incredible, as your work always is. I honestly can't believe that you've only seen one Donna ep, you NAILED her likeness! She looks radiant (yeah...she's my fave of the new run). And Nine's expression is (wait for it...) fanTASTic! We don't get to see him smiling enough in fanart.

Thank you so very much for posting this. You so made my day!

Marvelous! I love Eccleston and Donna especially. :D

Thank you - that is a relief! I don't know if your portrait sketching works the way mine does, but at a certain point I get a feeling of recognition or certainty from the picture. (in the sense of, "this is a good likeness for my current level of ability" :) ), and that was missing with Donna.

The next season is starting here in Australia very soon.

Thank you :) The colours were originally a little more varied between the portraits but this I liked this palette for the combination.
